Greening the Financial System: Mainstreaming Sustainable Finance

Efforts continue to increase the role of financial systems around the world in supporting sustainable development. This has manifested itself in a number of official and industry initiatives including: the Central Banks and Supervisors Network for Greening the Financial System; the European Commission’s Action Plan; the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures; and ambitious plans of global financial services firms to channel capital towards helping address environmental, social and governance issues.

While these initiatives should be celebrated, there is still much more to be accomplished. More needs to be done to mainstream green finance into the financial infrastructure.

It was within that context that senior policymakers and private financial sector leaders from around the globe gathered in Washington, DC on Friday, April 12, 2019 (during the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings Week) to find answers and share perspectives on the rapidly expanding field of sustainable finance.

The Institute of International Finance, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Paulson Institute, SIFMA and the United Nations Environment Programme hosted “Mainstreaming Sustainable Finance.”
