CHC 2019 winners

The SIFMA Foundation’s annual Capitol Hill Challenge™ (CHC) presented by the Charles Schwab Foundation is an exciting national financial education competition for middle and high school students that reaches every U.S. Congressional district. This year, nearly 13,000 students from 683 schools and 100% of Congress participated in the CHC program for the sixth consecutive year. Since it’s inception in 2004, CHC has made over 5,000 Congressional matches with schools, reaching over 125,000 students across the country.

CHC features the acclaimed Stock Market Game™ (SMG) program, which serves 600,000 public, private and parochial school students annually. Provided free of charge, CHC is a special edition of SMG focusing on public and Title I schools and providing access to high quality financial education programming.

CHC student teams manage a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, impact investments and cash. They learn workplace skills such as teamwork and critical thinking and improve their personal financial behavior and math competency. At the end of the competition, the top 10 performing teams win a trip with their teacher to Washington, DC.

This year, the top 10 CHC teams traveled from across the country and arrived in Washington, DC on Monday, June 10th, ready to celebrate their accomplishments. Students enjoyed a pizza party at SIFMA and presentations by several key SIFMA staff, followed by a sightseeing tour of national monuments.

Tuesday, June 11th began with breakfast at Morgan Stanley and presentations by industry professionals about career opportunities and strategic investing in the financial services sector. One of the highlights of the day was a visit to the Newseum including a scavenger hunt.  Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. hosted a panel discussion during lunch including Lisa Kidd Hunt, Executive Vice President, Business Initiatives; Scott Eckel, Vice President, Legislative & Regulatory Affairs, Daniel Stein, Vice President – Branch Manager and Casey Cortese, Managing Director. Congressional visits were scheduled throughout the three-day trip for the teams to meet their Members of Congress. Students then finished the festivities with the Capitol Hill Challenge Awards Reception at the Rayburn Foyer (Rayburn House Office Building), hosted by the co-chairs of the Financial Services Committee, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH -3) and Congressman Steve Stivers (OH-15).

On Wednesday, July 12th, teams enjoyed breakfast at RBC Wealth Management and a discussion with the Complex Director and other RBC staff regarding the importance of youth involvement in the financial sector and politics. After this engaging presentation, the students finished their trip with a private tour of the U.S. Capitol Building.

The SIFMA Foundation is grateful to the Charles Schwab Foundation for their support of the CHC program.
