Joao F. Gomes is the Howard Butcher III, Professor of Economics and Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is the current senior vice dean for research, centers, and academic initiatives and a former chair of the Wharton Finance Department. Professor Gomes’s research is on the interactions between financial markets and institutions with business cycles and monetary policy. He has won awards both as a teacher and for his research, including one for Best Asset Pricing Paper published in the Journal of Finance, and he is regularly invited to speak at many other leading universities and research institutions. Currently, Professor Gomes is also an associate editor of the Journal of Monetary Economics and a regular consultant of the U.S. Federal Reserve System. Previously, he was a visiting professor of finance at the London Business School and served as an economic advisor to the Ministry of Industry of Portugal. Professor Gomes has taught several courses and short seminars on various aspects of macroeconomics and financial markets to undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral students, both at Wharton and at other academic institutions. He has also designed and led many sessions for executives and policymakers.
