Burton Sheaffer

Assistant Professor of Professional Practice Rutgers Business School

Burton Sheaffer is an Assistant Professor of Professional Practice at the Rutgers Business School.  He brings over 30 years of professional finance experience into the classroom where he connects the world of academics with real world applications in markets and risk management.  Mr. Sheaffer worked at several of the worlds leading international financial institutions including JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Lehman Brothers and HSBC. Throughout his career he developed an expertise in OTC derivative markets, product development, and risk management while working with industry leading investment bankers, asset managers and corporate treasurers.

In the classroom Burton has focused on investments and markets, with courses including International Financial Management, Investment Analysis for undergrad and graduate students, and a Derivatives class for upper classmen.  Topics and discussion include current market events, how products are used in the marketplace, exchange vs OTC markets, and derivative risk management in practice.

As part of the Rutgers community Mr. Sheaffer is a mentor for both the Road to Wall Street program as well as the Scarlet Knight network.  For the last several years he has been the Rutgers team advisor for the Wells Fargo Advisors national portfolio management competition.

Outside of the RBS community, Burton Sheaffer continues his industry involvement through consulting at several leading hedge funds, speaking at industry panels, participating in an investment committee and maintaining active membership in industry groups.  Burton’s recent experience includes being a panelist at the Quinnipiac GAME Forum in New York, a member of the Dickinson College Investment Committee and a speaker on many college campuses including Cornell University, Washington University in St Louis, Quinnipiac University, and the University of Kentucky.  Mr. Sheaffer holds the CFA designation, the FINRA Series 7, 24 and 63, and is a member of the Society of Quantitative Analysts.
