Closing the Operational Gap in Alternatives
As private market alternatives expand across products, distribution channels and a broader investor base, the operating infrastructure supporting them must scale as well.
This paper from SIFMA and PwC, Closing the Operational Gap in Alternatives, examines the operational challenges facing the market as firms seek to broaden access while relying on front-end processes that often treat each product and relationship as bespoke.
Drawing on a series of SIFMA member roundtables, the paper identifies friction across the private-markets lifecycle—from product onboarding and investor eligibility to subscription processing, cash movement, servicing and transfers—and outlines a framework for greater consistency and scalability.
The paper does not call for uniform products, a single confirmation template or one settlement timeline. Instead, it proposes a governed operating baseline for the repeatable activities firms currently rebuild across relationships, including:
- A common core of reusable information, documentation, attestations and identifiers
- Product overlays to account for legitimate differences in product structure
- Participant overlays for narrower firm-specific requirements
- Shared definitions for key lifecycle states so market participants can reconcile the same events consistently
- A governed product cross-reference framework to connect existing identifiers across the lifecycle
The goal: standardize the rails, not the products—creating a more scalable operating foundation that supports faster onboarding, cleaner platform intake, fewer duplicative processes, stronger servicing continuity and more reliable execution as private markets continue to grow.
