America’s capital markets drive opportunity, innovation and growth. They help finance businesses, support investors, fund communities and power the economy.
This week, as members and guests gather in Washington, D.C., for SIFMA’s 2026 Annual Meeting, we are also marking an important milestone: 20 years serving our members as SIFMA.
While SIFMA was formed in 2006, our organizational roots date back more than a century. The Investment Bankers Association of America was founded in 1912, followed by other predecessor organizations that evolved alongside the markets themselves. From the beginning, the idea was much the same as it is today: bring the industry together around shared challenges, strengthen the markets and help support effective capital formation.
20 Years of Change, Resilience and Progress
The past two decades have been defined by extraordinary change.
Just two years after SIFMA was formed, the global financial crisis tested the strength and resilience of markets around the world. The crisis was followed by the Dodd-Frank Act and the most significant financial regulatory reforms since the Great Depression, reshaping financial oversight and reinforcing the importance of financial stability, transparency and sound risk management.
The years that followed brought new challenges and continued modernization. Superstorm Sandy underscored the importance of business continuity and industry coordination. Cybersecurity also became an increasingly important industry-wide priority as threats evolved and firms strengthened preparedness, coordination and resilience. The transition from T+3 to T+2 settlement demonstrated what market participants, regulators and infrastructure providers could accomplish by working together.
Then, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented uncertainty and volatility. Firms across the securities industry transitioned rapidly to remote operations, while U.S. capital markets remained open and operational — continuing to support investors, businesses and governments during a period of acute economic stress.
More recently, the successful move to T+1 settlement provided another example of industry-wide coordination in action, reducing settlement risk while modernizing a fundamental part of the U.S. securities markets.
Through each of these moments, SIFMA has brought members together, engaged with policymakers and regulators, and worked to support resilient, effective markets.
Building on More Than a Century of History
Our story did not begin in 2006, and neither did the story of the markets we serve.
America’s capital markets have evolved through periods of extraordinary growth, disruption, reform and innovation — from the earliest days of organized securities trading, through the market reforms that followed the Great Depression, to the technological transformation of modern markets.
SIFMA’s own history reflects that evolution. Our predecessor organizations changed and combined as the industry changed, culminating in the 2006 merger of the Securities Industry Association and The Bond Market Association to form SIFMA.
To mark our anniversary, we have created an interactive timeline exploring the market events, policy developments, industry advances and moments of resilience that have shaped the U.S. capital markets — alongside SIFMA’s role throughout that history.

Looking to the Next 20 Years
Today, the markets are entering another period of significant transformation.
Digital assets, tokenization, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, Treasury clearing, extended trading hours and evolving market structure are changing how markets operate and how investors, issuers and intermediaries interact. These developments bring tremendous opportunity, along with important questions about policy, implementation, investor protection, market integrity and resilience.
The issues change. The technologies change. The markets evolve. But the value of bringing the industry together remains constant.
As we begin our Annual Meeting this week and look toward the next 20 years, SIFMA’s mission remains clear: to serve our members and champion effective, resilient U.S. capital markets that support investors, capital formation, economic growth and American competitiveness.
For 20 years as SIFMA — and with organizational roots dating back to 1912 — we are proud of the role our members have played in strengthening America’s capital markets and look forward to the work ahead.
