SIFMA provides comments to the U.S. Department of Treasury on the European Commission’s proposed General Data Protection Regulation (2012/0011), published on January 25, 2012. The proposal contains new rules on applicable law governing the protection of individuals with regard to the data processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.  SIFMA is concerned the proposal is targeted at unregulated industry sectors, but applies equally to the financial services industry which is already subject stringent regulation and oversight in both the United States and EU.
