Course Description

In 2019, The Business Roundtable released a game-changing declaration that companies should consider stakeholders’ (in addition to shareholders’) interests when devising ongoing strategy and responding to escalating global challenges like climate change, inequality, and the rise of artificial intelligence.  This class will grapple with the question of how firms can go about strategy-formation in a new era of stakeholder primacy.  The class will cover contemporary empirical work that sheds light on the business case for social responsibility, emerging approaches to incentives and metrics that quantify corporate performance in Environmental, Social and Governance domains, and strategies for engaging contemporary social movements that call on firms to respond to the interests of their broader stakeholder community.
