James Cato is a Managing Director in The Bank of New York Mellon’s Corporate Tax department and specializes in information reporting and U.S. tax withholding. One of Jim’s primary functions is to advise the firm on the tax technical rules necessary to implement new Treasury regulations, including cost basis reporting, FATCA, 871m and 305c. Prior to joining BNY Mellon, Jim was a Senior Manager with Ernst & Young’s Financial Services Office in New York where he advised financial institutions on all matters related to tax reporting and withholding. He has worked for a number of financial institutions during his career including Merrill Lynch, JP Morgan Chase, Prudential Financial, and Painewebber. Jim obtained his B.S. in Business Management from Florida Atlantic University and his J.D. from the University of Houston Law School.
