In 2005, the strain of influenza virus found in birds in Asia showed some potential to infect humans and there is a possibility, although remote, that this strain could lead to the next human pandemic. An influenza pandemic might result in very significant absentee rates simultaneously in multiple geographic areas for extended periods. This situation could challenge some business continuity strategies that address traditional hazards. The following information is provided as a guideline to assist organizations in designing pandemic influenza response strategies. The material is not intended as a single best practice approach. Organizations may wish to utilize those elements that are appropriate to their specific situations.
