International: Revising The Visa Process

Last Updated: June 9, 2008

Overview:
The current visa process has unnecessarily hindered U.S. financial services firms from bringing employees and clients into the United States for legitimate business purposes. In this increasingly global marketplace, an essential factor in the continued success of the U.S. financial services sector is its ability to regularly move personnel among global offices and to invite international clients to participate first hand in the U.S. markets.

Position:
SIFMA believes the current visa process imposes unnecessary impediments to the continued success of U.S. financial services firms and to the United States being a global financial center. SIFMA proposes modifications to the current visa system, which will maintain the integrity and effectiveness of the system without unnecessary limitations on legitimate business practices.

Status:
The Business Travel Facilitation Act of 2007 (H.R.888), introduced in February by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY), would provide authorized entry into the United States for qualified business purposes.
