Like many other industries, the financial services industry has become the target of "trolls" who purport to own the
intellectual property rights to a particular patent used by a financial services provider.
These claims are proving costly for SIFMA members.
Launched in 2005, the SIFMA Clearinghouse assists SIFMA member firms in communicating with each other on various intellectual
property matters (patent, copyright, trademark, trade secret), including third party infringement claims. Subscribers may
now use the SIFMA Clearinghouse to review and analyze third-party claims to the subscriber's intellectual property. The SIFMA
Clearinghouse may also prove to be a useful tool to uncover important prior art that may not have been considered in patent examinations.
